Retro Steak Night

by September 5 2010

So today we looked at our calendar and both of us realize how fast this year as gone. Students arriving this week and we have two more theme dinners... THIS week all properties are full.

Tonight's dinner is the Retro Steak Night which we have not done before. As much as I would love to say it should go without a hitch, the reality is that just doesn't happen!

Already when making the clam dip we had to buy some canned "clam like" looking animal. When we brought it home and opened the clams were all pretty big! It would be next to impossible to make a dip with these "as is".

One cannot buy "minced clams" with a picture of a fisherman on the label. Here you get a can with a picture of the shell and never know what is inside.

I chopped the clams as much as possible and the end result is that they smell and taste like clams but the color is different. Hopefully the guests' martinis will kick in and I don't have to worry about the odd color on the clam dip... OH and of course one guest has a food issue.

The "issue" this year has been "nothing with yeast". This means grapes, wine, cheese, bread etc., etc.

So this guest can't have anything with refined sugar. Made them a cheese cake made with a mango reduction and a crust of hazelnuts. It is OK but sure would be better with some refined sugar! Will let you know how the evening went. Have to get back to cooking and preparing for the evening.

SUPER! Also, for fun, buy candy in the shape of pills and label them so your guests can take home "Dolls" aka Phenobarbitol as a gift to remember the night. What is really amazing is that this classic recipes are fantastic when made from scratch, Let us know how your evening turns out.
Cheers
Christopher
