Digame,,,, me Dijeste y no Existe!The old fashion Digame has been circulating in the Torrox area for the last couple of years or so. ¡Digame! became a victim of it’s own success when the circulation became large enough to cause technical difficulties in distributing the emails. Sad because the new version just is not the same! An even bigger thanks to Mrs Ed a.k.a Sandra, for creating Digame and keeping it going for so long. Will miss the personal and catty comments :) She worked so hard for so long and Digame that I hear she is celebrating the fact that she is well shot of it by time off in Madrid. Surely a well deserved break. Now, however, with Digame under new management, I find myself with a redundant Scottish-English dictionary. Any takers? Thank you Sandra and David

Find out the details from the lovely Lourdes at the Tourist office on the paseo, Torrox Costa and say Dígame sent you.Dear Digame Readers UNSCRUPULOUS PROPERTY AGENTS ALERT I rented my property in Torrox Pueblo in April 09 via email and telephone communication with what I thought to be a reputable Property Agent. The said agent took a finder’s fee of 390 Euro and has left me with over 1,500 Euro of damage to my property and approx 800 Euros owed in rent.On arriving at my property on 1st August, being owed 2 months’ rent, I found two very undesirable characters, from the UK, in my house. The house was completely destroyed, the said tenants had upset and frightened my Spanish neighbours and needless to say had no rent money for me. I immediately evicted them and their puppies, and I understand they are renting elsewhere in the village. The Property Agent that introduced these unsavoury characters refused to show me any evidence of references they had taken up, had no complaints book (a legal requirement for businesses operating in Andalucia), have so far offered no explanation as to why they allowed these people into my house and no compensation. I have been to the Police who are investigating the matter, but in the mean time please be very careful about who you deal with. I have phoned them at the UK international pension centre, to see if they will be sent out automatically and have been told that no decision has been made yet, it may be the pension dept that sends them, or we may have to apply to the same place as anyone living in the Uk applies to. The final decision should be made by mid nov. Bye the way friends got to Brum Airport and found that the hand baggage which they had always used with Monarch didn't fit into the BMI measuring box. They wanted over 100 pounds for them to put it in the hold!! My friends sent it back to their UK address with the people who had taken them to the airport. I then tried sending myself an image to a Yahoo account and also had no trouble. I also tried forwarding one of your earlier Digame messages with images in the body of the message to my Yahoo account and again no problem. So it's not the case that Yahoo won't accept images, either in the body of the e-mail or in the attachments.However, when the message is displayed in the Yahoo mailbox, you have to click on the button above the message to allow you to see the inline images, otherwise they will be blocked. Also, if Digame readers who are having difficulty with images are viewing the emails by downloading them via their normal e-mail software (e.g. Outlook Express), then it may be their e-mail software settings that are causing the problem. Outlook Express by default will block all inline images in emails. Though you can usually view the images by clicking on the option at the top of the message to allow viewing of the images.As for those people who are having trouble opening attachments, if you are sending the attachment as Word 97 - 2003, then unless they have a very old version of Word (pre 97) or don't have Word at all, they should be able in principle to open them. Hello Dígame.I have just been told by a reporter on the Costa Del Sol News that this morning he has interviewed a couple who own a reformed finca hotel in Alcaucín with excellent facilities for disabled people and their families. Mr. Ed and I along with friends attended the concert in the caves last night with Josep Carreras. It was a wonderful experience and a great night all organized by Viajes Alcodalla. We had great seats and a taxi collected us from our various homes and delivered us safely at the end of the night – thanks Rosario and Maria. We arranged our own meal at the restaurant at the entrance to the caves complex, Puente de Aguilla (that’s probably wrong but near enough, DJ will correct me), and had a lovely meal with excellent service.

Message for Next Digame "Hi all - I'd like to make a comment about these emails that do the rounds - most of them are HOAXES - If I get one, I always check first on a website called www.hoaxslayer.com before I even think of passing it on (which I hardly ever do). Type in hoaxslayer in your browser to find the website, then, in the search box on hoaxslayer, just type some key words in the title or body of the message you got, and it will find it, tell you all about it and whether it is a hoax or not. Then I always "reply to all" on the email lists (which should have been bcc'd) telling them not to pass it on because it is a hoax - I usually copy and paste what hoaxslayer says about the hoax in the email - ask them to refer in future to hoaxslayer.com and asking them to use the bcc function for sending emails. That usually stops these emails in their tracks - otherwise they just go on and on, round and round, year after year, wasting everyone's time and energy... and in this heat - Phew! Irene"

The summer programme for Torrox and El Morche is available now from the tourist office (thanks to Lourdes, via Dave, I got a copy). There are loads of things happening so try and get your own copy but I’ll attempt to keep you informed. First thing to note is music at the Mirador, Torrox Costa at 21.30 on Friday 24th July, next is the final of the copla, same place, same time but on 25th. 26th has Band Music in Plaza Picasso in the pueblo ….. and much, much more.

Mr. Ed and I were handing yet more ‘stuff’ into Cudeca in Nerja and I had to get hauled out! They have so many super bargains inside, it’s almost impossible to ignore them. Hola, to all the kind people who suggested musicians. Just as all the information came in I had booked Mark Shurey on the recommendations of a neighbour. Apparently he is a very good osteopath too!! (Just in case I put my back out at the party, we OAP's have to be more careful don't we)? Thanks again to all, and Digame, regards Jean Wainwright, Monte Alegre. PS will keep other info., for my next big birthday. Mr. Ed and I went to Caleta to see the Virgen del Carmen last night and hopped on a bus – only problem was the buses didn’t come back along the N340 so we waited over an hour before giving up and getting a taxi. Another lesson learned about life in Spain. We did have a great time so it was worth it.

Hi folks! Nigel here! As I am getting more and more spam mail these days I thought I'd send this off to everybody in my address book. Forgive me if you already know about this and think I'm going on about something you've known for ages! Those not in the know may benefit in the long term from this suggestion! Not to put a negative slant on emails that are genuine and caring, but there are those out there who pray on those of us who are deemed to be uncaring if we fail to 'forward this email to at least ten people' etc etc,, you know the ones - a little girl in Kansas dying of cancer or How much you love your family and friends etc......etc...etc.... I firmly believe that there are companies out there who pay people (call me a cynic!) to come up with these circulation emails as a method of obtaining private email addresses solely for the purpose of spam emails. I'm not sure how they do it - maybe there's a code within the original email that sends each forwarded address to the original sender. Anyhoo - the way to help yourself and others!!!! When you forward these types of emails, instead of inserting the next recipients into the Carbon Copy (c.c.) box, use the B.c.c. facilty - Blind Carbon Copy. This way the recipients addresses are protected and not visible to all of the other recipients - hence you will see that this email appears to have only been sent to Mandy and you! (THe only downside of this is that mutual friends will probably forward some emails to you that you have already received as they are unaware that you have already received the email due to this very method! - but I'd rather receive a dulpicate email from friends than all of the junk email I get these days!) It will help cut down on your spam!!! Nigel

Sorry about another issue so hot on the heels of the last. Since I’m off at 8.00 in the morning, I thought I would do it now and save Mr. Ed the bother. He’s too busy playing with his new computer anyway.
The Intercultural Week in Torrox is 8-10 July. Great photographic exhibition in El Convento. Lots of workshops and the film Babel is on Thursday at 21.00 (El Convento). On Friday at Plaza Maria Zambrano in El Morche is the highlight of the event with food from Spain, Ukraine, Senegal, Marroco, Argentina, Ecuador and Brasil at 21.30. At 22.00 assorted music and dance from most of these countries too. Looks like a fabby night – and I’m in Scotland!
We had a super lunch today in Javi on the costa. Great menu del dia and excellent service – and that’s not so common around here. It’s located near Blanco Paloma and La Cita, towards the lighthouse.

Bar is located thus:- after leaving Torre del Mar on the coast road, go past the old tower and Go-Kart track (both on the left). After a short distance there is a property on the left hand side. Alongside this house is the road that takes you towards the sea. Follow the road through the shoreside village (over bumps) then past the first chiringuito until you see Bar Bar Playa. We start at approx 8pm. Come and enjoy live music, from James Brown to the Spencer Davis Group to Bob Dylan. Relaxed beachside atmosphere! Saturday 18th July at Bar Sirocco, Puente Don Manuel - come and watch Guiri!! Hi, i waited for the bus to malaga yesterday to take my granddaughter to the picasso museum and after some time was informed the buses were not going to the usual stop. by chance we found they are only going as far as the convent. do you have any details on for how long, and if any buses will be going to the other end of the village? not a sign anywhere as far as i can see! thanks, valerie.
Ed says – all buses to and from the pueblo will start and stop at El Convento/cemetery until the big hole in the road near El Rubio is fixed. It will probably take a week (mas o menos) so make sure you give yourself plenty time to get down there.

Hola Digame, Kurt here from Seacrest Kennels, Before I went on holiday in early June there was someone asking for a caregiver/cook in Nerja for someone suffering from Alzheimers. Sorry it has taken me a while to get organised after returning from holiday but my friends Sarah and Fernando are just such a couple. I hope you can forward their information to the appropriate party. Sarah was a licenced Social Worker in the UK and Fernando worked as a caregiver for London Burrow-Hillingdale (sorry if I misspelled). Actually they are both quite handy people to know on the Costa as they are bilingual, Fernando is a good cook and also does gardening and pool maintenance while Sarah manages holiday properties and does change-overs. About that time, they were painted over and destroyed and he would like a record of the original interior. HiI am suffering once again from a bad back and having had every treatment from acupuncture to traction over the past 30 years I am now interested in trying the Bowen Technique, which I see a couple of people on the Costa practice. I wondered if any Digame readers have had any experience of this type of treatment and their feedback.I also would like any recommendations of private doctors in the Torrox area (we currently use one in Nerja but it's not always convenient for parking). Has anyone used the doctors at the Centro Mar y Salud in El Morche, or the Clinica Europa in Torrox-Costa for example? ThanksBarbarawickseyb@hotmail.com PS. Hi Dígame, Thanks for your emails - they just suddenly started coming through about 3 weeks ago! Interesting information on the proposed works in the square - all looks a bit sterile though. They seem to be spending lots of money - where does it all come from?! Personally, I would prefer to keep the old Sixties fountain than have none at all... I have a small query that you may know the answer to. There used to be a dvd hire shop opposite Orange Square in Nerja. It closed down months ago - taking our €50 deposit with it! Do you know what happened there? We were hoping they would re-open somewhere else, but haven't so far. Feel a bit miffed about our €50! Any info gratefully received. Chinese 'Haute Cuisine' in Burriana We have recently discovered Restaurant Oriental on Burriana Beach in Nerja. Margaret (my wife) is Chinese so I can assure you that we really do know about Chinese cuisine and we can say that the food is quite superb. The extravert chef ("Mr King", as he likes to be known) learnt his trade in Chinatown in Soho and his goal is to provide real Chinese haute cuisine to the holiday makers of Nerja. The setting and the menu are unpretentious but let Mr King advise you on what to eat (and how to eat it) and you will discover chinese cooking as you have never known it. But beware that if it's your typical English 'sweet and sour' you're after, you may be disappointed. Oriental is right down the far end (away from Nerja town centre) of Burriana beach. Don't confuse it with the two cheapo chinese restaurants you will first go past. It's more expensive than the typical chinese restaurant around here, but worth every centimo. Hi ¡Digame!I don't know if you have already posted this, but the bar Puente Aguila just outside the gates of the Nerja Caves is now open in the evenings with live music on Tuesday and Friday Nights. It's a good way of spending a Summer's evening after a walk in the Natural Park. Paul and Salvatore are jolly hosts, and the wine is plentiful and cheap with a good evening menu. Unlike most of the other crews in the race, James and Jamie have very few sponsors and are really struggling to get anywhere near their fund-raising targets for their two charities. But at only 21 and 22 years of age, they are on course to become the youngest people ever to cross an ocean in a rowing boat. Dispite everyone telling them they don't have enough food to get to Mauritius, they are still battling away and, incredibly, are winning the 'pairs race' (with all the other pairs boats but one already having dropped out and the four boats in front of them having crews of either 4 or 8 rowers). So, how about making a donation to help these magnificent two young English lads raise funds for their charities. Hello Dígame, I would like to let people know about Scamper Ramps, as l have 7 cats and 2 dogs which love water, now having a property with a pool l was concerned, my landlord was happy to install cement steps for me but as my pool is square and very deep this was going to be quite a job to do, then l heard of Scamper Ramps, easy to fit and specially designed for animals to get out of pools if they go in. Just spent the last week working in archez. folks in competa were very curt. did not know what that was about until I spoke with the locals in the bar back in Archez. General consensus was . What was a man of his age in a disco for?To back up his sons in some kind of fracas? The Nerja Town Hall Foreigners Department informs of the following news: TREATMENT FOR PALM TREE INFECTED BY BEETLE. Since September 2008 La Junta de Andalucía is no longer responsible for treating, cutting and collecting palm trees that have been infected by the Palm beetle. If a palm tree is infected, the owner is now responsible for cutting and transporting it to the Cantera Valverde at El Río de la Miel. We recommend that palms are sprayed and watered with 15 or 20 litres of Durban 48 every three months to prevent possible infections. This product should be applied by a qualified person. There is a certified company in Nerja: Adetex, C/ Río Chillar, edificio La Rambla II bajo, tel. 95 252 2344. They also use a new treatment that involves injecting the palm tree. This involves 3 applications at an approximate cost of: 60 € each (total 180€). Communities can request quotes. All costs must be paid by the owner of the palm tree. TREATMENT FOR PROCESSIONARY CATERPILLARS The processionary caterpillars in pine trees can be treated by the same company; this should be done between September and November. It Costs approximately: 60-80 € for a single treatment.

Exciting happenings this month are ---- San Antonio 12 – 14 June in Torrox Pueblo. This is the same as San Isidro only better as much less commercial. It all happens from the area of the Franco Houses near Plaza San Antonio past the cemetery with parades, horses, dancing, all night bars etc. The procession comes up and through the village – not to be missed!
Night of San Juan on the evening of 23rd June on the beaches – everywhere! Locals start setting up tents and BBQ’s from morning and it lasts for at least 24 hours. In the village, meet at Concordia (the new car park not finished) and join the fun and procession to the river to wet your head.
Cine Club Nerja is finished until October, as is NADFAS and the Nerja History Group so you have a free summer to enjoy the sunshine, sand and sangria.

Dígame, please put this in as an observation from the rest of us.It would appear that everyone that moves from the UK to here has to have at least two dogs. Thats fine as long as they do not bother the rest of us.In the last two days I have seen a german lady and her husband, not dog lovers quite scared as someones medium sized dog was trying to scrounge food while they were eating at a bar. Yesterday someone had two dogs, neither on a leash who managed to spill several drinks. If you must impose on the rest of us keep the thing on a leash.Dogs should not be in restaurants anyway. I had quotations from plumbers prepared to do the work at a price.. In a person named Martin Watts I found the perfect man for the job He completely replaced all the pipework, valves, filter and pump and now I have a perfect system. Exposición en Frigiliana (Palacio de Apero) 5-26 de Junio Los 5 artistas que componen el grupo de artistas “INTER 5” hablan sobre sus antecedentes, cómo llegaron a trabajar juntos y cuáles son sus aspiraciones para el futuro. Entre estas 5 personas hay 4 nacionalidades, cada uno con su propia influencia cultural. Hilary Clegg-Mullany es del noroeste de Inglaterra y su trabajo ha estado muy influenciado por repetir patrones textiles producidos en la industria del diseño. Ella ahora encuentra cierto paralelismo en el diseño geométrico árabe, que es abundante en Andalucía y aparece regularmente en su trabajo. Terminó su formación y sus estudios en Swansea Collage of Art y se graduó en pintura. (Yes, this is OUR Hilary!) Al mismo tiempo, Jeff Mills, que es galés, de Rhondda Valley, estaba estudiando para su licenciatura en pintura en el Cardiff College of Art. Mientras vive y trabaja en Gales, la geografía y el color de Rhondda Valley se refleja en el trabajo de Jeff y ahora de la misma manera, los colores y las formas de Andalucía han cobrado importancia en su trabajo. En aquel momento, en la década de 1960, aunque Hilary y Jeff expusieron en la misma galería, la Glynn Vivian en Swansea, no se conocían entre sí, pero igualmente recibieron una tradicional, pero esclarecedora educación artística que abarca todos los estilos que surgían en este momento. Fue un tiempo para romper las barreras, pero aún tiene la base y la constante influencia de los maestros clásicos. Este tipo de educación les ha dado la confianza para experimentar y explorar los nuevos horizontes de su trabajo aquí en la Axarquía. Per Weischenfeldt, de Copenhague, cuya familia tenía un negocio de cerámica, por así decirlo, nació un poco con la arcilla en sus manos y se empapa de la tradición. Criado en esa atmósfera, desprende un aura de confianza sólido propio. En la Academia Real de Dinamarca, Per se graduó en escultura, pero la educación que recibió, no sólo amplió su conocimiento de la escultura y la cerámica, sino que lo animó a asimilar muchas otras disciplinas de las bellas artes. Per es escultor, pero su trabajo incluye: alfarería, grabado dibujo y pintura. Es un trabajador prolífico, y este gran danés tiene las manos con un delicado toque. José Manuel García, Artista Plástico que nació y actualmente reside en Torrox, se licenció en Bellas Artes por la Universidad de Granada. José Manuel, destaca con una prolífica obra en la que se incluye pintura, escultura, fotografía así como vídeo-instalación. Su trabajo es una buena muestra de una mente inquieta sumida en la búsqueda de nuevos lenguajes gráfico-plásticos. La experimentación en la pintura con multitud de técnicas y materiales así como fusión de estilos figurativos y abstractos conforman un trabajo interdisciplinar. Su pintura se inspira en el Barroco de Velázquez y Caravaggio pero también bebe del Arte Contemporáneo del siglo XIX y XX. Por otro lado las nuevas tecnologías son utilizadas como herramienta de estudio y documentación para el desarrollo e investigación de nuevos procesos creativos que se manifiestan en sus instalaciones y trabajos audio-visuales. Flor de Lys Pérez como músico entre los pintores y escultores, ha aportado una dimensión diferente al grupo. Flor es de Adra, Almería, y también licenciada en la Universidad de Granada. Ella es profesora, y compositora. El trabajo de Flor, que se reproducirá durante la exposición, aporta entusiasmo y tranquilidad a las artes visuales, ya que combina sonidos clásicos y contemporáneos. Su música se adhiere y enriquece la diversidad de la labor de los demás miembros del grupo. Para la inauguración de la exposición, se espera que Flor realice la interpretación de una pieza de la obra que ha escrito. Flor toca la guitarra y el piano. Esta música también estará disponible en DVD en la exposición.

Hi All, Just a word of warning to all cat owners. Yesterday sadly my 4year old cat passed away whilst under vet care. After autopsy,it showed a type of poison, poss liquid form. It affects the throat,and upper stomach, which starts a bleed, which then attacks the nervous system and the brain. First signs are intense saliva around the mouth, poss burn marks to the paw pads, where they tread in the liquid, difficulty eating and drinking,as the poison will burn the mouth. I live in the campo,so this may be isolated to the farm land. My two other cats are still having treatment, and maybe ok Thanks Sue
Hi Folks. Could you please include the following in your next issue. My wife and I went to the new "Lew's Fish & Chip" restaurant at El Faro Torrox Costa (late Light of India) and enjoyed a great meal. Their food is truly traditional right down to the curry sauce. The menu was quite extensive and included various pies, pasties, sausage rolls, quarter and double quarter burgers but their Cod, Chips,and Mushy Peas were fantastic. They also offer deserts and a take-away-service. For a really inexpensive, very satisfying traditional meal, this is the "plaice" to go. Thank you.... Bernie 95-2030-566

Ed says – I bought 6 bottles of acrylic paint some years ago to do stenciling on my roof terrace. It never happened and now I would like to recover some of the cost (I paid 31.53 euros, I have the receipt). We read your letter with interest, but as bad as your case may seem watch out because it can get worse. When we bought our house almost 6 years ago, our solicitor told us we had to pay extra tax because the property was undervalued. The bill came to 1750 and we gave the solicitor a cheque which he photocopied, using the copy with a stamp and signature as a form of receipt and that was that. We never saw the original paperwork and it all seemed fine. However, about three months ago, a registered letter arrived addressed to me individually informing me that I owed 1300 euros. No reason was given, all the official letter said was that because I had not responded to two previous communications (never received, but how can that be proved?) I had lost all rights of appeal and that the money had to be paid within three weeks. After some investigation through a gestor we discovered that the amount I owed represented half of the extra tax (875 euros) plus a fine, plus administration costs. Now, here is the interesting point... in Spain, foreigners are treated differently depending on their country of origin. In the case of the English, couples are deemed to own 50% of the property each and that cheque for 1750 euros six years ago SHOULD have been split in half and paid in under the individual names for me and my husband. It now looks as though my husband was credited with the total amount of the original cheque - needless to say, there was no refund of the overpayment on his behalf - and I paid nothing. Had we been French, then the problem would not have arisen because like the Spanish, the French hold joint ownership of the whole property. So to everyone who is caught up in paying this extra undervaluation tax, check with your solicitor, should you use one, under whose name is it paid and get a copy of the official paperwork. We are currently trying to get a refund but it looks as though it is going to be a long process and it is unlikely that we will be refunded the whole 1300 euros.Jacky Summers summersinspain@hotmail.com

We were chastised for not locating the owner of the vacant lot and offering them money to put in a door. So now we have a "stairway to nowhere"! Has anyone lost a dog?
FOUND on Torrox Park today, Saturday, 9th May, tied up by the new school, a lovely light golden , long haired labrador. Around 3 years old. No collar but used to people and very friendly and house trained. We have taken him in over the weekend but unfortuantely our own pooch is not amused and we don't have room for two dogs. We have contacted the police to see if anyone has reported him missing as we think he may have wandered off, hopefully he has not been abandoned. We have also contacted CAS and they advised us to take him to a vet on Monday to see if he is microchipped. Dear Parents There is a party in Malaga on Saturday May 9th. The occasion is Europe day. Parents, children and teachers have been invited from all over Málaga. There will be sports, craft activities, storytelling etc…There will be a Seafood Paella for lunch, and lots of interesting people to meet. The home in Malaga is one of four to be established by the Order and was inaugurated on 19 November 1977. The Principal of the Malaga home is Brother Juan Correa Ruiz. Determined by age there are two houses within the home: the first house is for seventeen children between infant and 12 years of age; the second is for a maximum of 35 children between the ages of 12 and 18 years.The home is authorised to provide infant, primary, secondary, and special needs education for the children living there. In addition, there are a host of support programmes: health, speech therapy, prevention of addictions: tobacco, alcohol, drugs, careers advice, social skills and self-esteem, to name but a few. There are also a number of workshops teaching crafts and practical skills to help the older residents find work when they reach 18. The Junta de Andalucia give some financial support but only for the children formally taken into care.Additionally, the home cares for a further 125 children from the shanty-town on the outskirts of Malaga who would otherwise be abandoned on a daily basis for whom there is no financial support. The home clothes, feeds, and educates these children relying entirely on charitable donations to fund their care. The outstanding feature of the Cuidad de los Niños is the undeniable sense of family and care created by Brother Juan and his team. The young people in his care are a credit to Brother Juan and a beacon for what can be achieved with children desperately in need of love, guidance, and someone who cares what happens to them in adult life. Fishy Problem We have a fishpond and had a stable collection of around 50 goldfish. During the past week, almost 40, apparently fit, unmarked fish have died. We emptied the pond, cleaned it and put in fresh water along with 15 fish. They continue to die and we are left with just 9 now. Does anyone have any idea why this might have happened? We suspect they have been poisoned by wind-borne copper sulphate that locals put on their grapevines at this time of year. Also - when the deaths have stopped, we shall need more fish. Mr. Ed and I along with friends went to the café on the top of the new car park in Torrox Pueblo, just for a drink, and we had great service, cheap prices and super tapas. Café Almedina is always so quiet and if people don’t use it, it will close down. Have a wee wander round the pueblo and stop off for drinks, lunches, cake, coffee, anything. If you have kids, they can play on the swings and you can see them all the time. We had an ice-cream at the ice-cream parlour on the way home but that’s not obligatory.

Hello all, I just received an email from the Director of the Nerja Cultural Centre regarding the Bulgarian Choir appearing there Saturday evening at 20.00h (8 pm). Any one that goes to the box office and says they would like a RSA Invitation will receive a free ticket to the performance. This is choir has gained international recognition with their ambitious repertoire of music. They have performed in the capitals of over thirty countries, including New York, Paris, London and Hong Kong. Also, along with their various recordings for television and radio, they received the title of “European Cultural Ambassadors” by the European Coral Federation in 2002. We will announce it on the radio but would appreciate people sending out the word via email also - so we can let as many people know as possible!
